One plays like Steve Cropper and BB King, the other is a classical vocalist fluent in Handel, Copland, and Rorem. He’s a successful entertainment lawyer, she’s a music teacher, and together they’ve released 6 nationally distributed award-winning albums for families and kids of all ages, winning accolades from USA Today, NH Magazine, Parents Choice, Children’s Book of the Month Club, and more.
Peggo & Paul are a husband and wife duo that, not surprisingly, met through music. When Peggo placed an ad in the Boston Phoenix looking for a guitarist to round out a budding folk trio, Paul was inspired to answer; the marriage of Peggo's expressive soprano with Paul's tasteful guitar and producing skills were a perfect fit, and in the ‘70s and early ‘80s they regularly performed their own original folk compositions throughout New England and beyond.
In 1986, after a number of years as Assistant Attorney General of New Hampshire and with an outstanding private practice career already in full swing, Paul decided to create a vehicle for his music and founded Big Round Records. The duo launched a new career by pioneering rock and roll for kids and families with their band, Peggosus.
JUBILEE (1987) and DIGGIN’ IN THE DIRT (1991), both released on the Boston Skyline imprint and currently being prepared for re-release this spring through Fountainbleu/Burnside, were hailed as instant classics for toddlers and young children and selected by USA Today as one of their “Kids Picks”; in addition, the band’s music videos were picked up for airplay by The Learning Channel and The Discovery Channel, providing valuable exposure to both kids and adults. Peggo and Paul maintained an active performance schedule, playing the region extensively but also hitting the road for larger events, including a gig at the Clinton White House.
With teenagers instead of toddlers in the house, Peggo & Paul began to record contemporary acoustic albums, forming a bridge between their family music and folk music. Their first self-produced and recorded album, PATCHWORK QUILT, A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN SPIRIT (1996) won a Parent's Choice award for family listening, and they have followed with two highly acclaimed acoustic recordings, SUMMER NIGHTS, LULLABIES AND SOOTHING SONGS (1999) and WINTER’S LIGHT, CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS (2002). They have also released a best-of compilation titled STAND
UP! SPEAK OUT!, a benefit for autistic children.
In the last year Peggo & Paul have returned to children’s music with the release of the book/cd ROCK A BABY BAND (Little-Brown/Time-Warner), which teams them up with author Kate McMullan and illustrator Janie Bynum in a musical story geared toward infants and toddlers who form a band. The book was released to strong sales and widespread acclaim in May 2003, and a second book/cd in the series, titled BATHTIME BLUES, is already in the works. In addition, JUBILEE, DIGGIN’ IN THE DIRT, and STAND
UP! SPEAK OUT! are currently being prepared for reissue through Big Round/Fountainbleu with new artwork and expanded liner notes.
